Year 9 completed their study of vocation to married life this week, by hosting a wedding fair in the RE room. Today the average cost of a wedding in the UK is £20,000, with money spent lavishly on outfits, venue and catering.
For many young couples, this is prohibitive and marriage is put off, whilst for others, married life starts with money problems and debt. With this in mind, pupils were challenged to plan a wedding with a budget of only £2,000. As well as sourcing alternative venues, menus, transport, stationery, flowers, dresses etc, they were asked to produce an order of service with appropriate readings and hymns.
A lot of creativity was required and the finished products were impressive; however, what was really important was that pupils realised that a lifelong commitment of love and faithfulness does not depend on extravagance and excess.
Miss Lambe, Mrs Hesp and Mrs Holdcroft, along with some Year 10 pupils came along to judge the work. They were very impressed by the outcomes.
Well done to all in Year 9. I hope you remember the lessons learned in a few years’ time when you are planning your own!
