Signal 1 Creation Day - Written by Year 8

Overall it was a very fun day and we all enjoyed it a lot. We got to learn all about the radio, what happens behind the scenes and so much more. We started off by introducing ourselves and finding out from Max Mallen (the late night show presenter) what it’s like to be in a studio. Then, we came up with our own radio show which led up to the finale of us creating our very own radio advert to advertise our school.

In school we met Max and Emma from Signal 1. They explained to us their very different jobs at Signal. We learned about the different jobs that contribute to making Signal amazing. We were even able to try out having our own radio station and being a presenter. After that, we wrote our own adverts for our school’s Open Day and performed them for Mrs. Harrison, the class, Max and Emma.

The winning team was decided after we had completed two workshops. One was based on radio presenting and the other on advertising. Once the winner was decided, Mrs. Harrison used lines from everyone’s efforts to make the best possible advert. The winning group got to record their advert at the Signal 1 studio.

The winners went on the train to go and record the school advert which would then be aired on Signal 1. Everyone else came to the studios later and we all went into a meeting room to get told what we were doing. We were split into two groups and had a tour of the Signal 1 studios. We took pictures and saw all of the technology behind it. When an interview is taking place there are cameras that move over to whoever is talking so the crew don’t have to edit when it goes online.

In addition, we had a Q & A session with the midmorning presenter Elliot Holman.

After we left Signal 1 we were all really glad that we had the opportunity to meet everyone, have a tour, receive our lovely goody bags and certificates. We couldn’t wait to tell our parents!
